Earth Month: What it means to us.

April is Earth Month.

You’ll probably see a lot about sustainability this time of year—big promises, bold claims, and a lot of new messaging. We’ve always felt a little differently about it. For us, this has never really been about one month. It’s about the choices we make every day—what we put into our products, how we source our ingredients, and the standards we hold ourselves to behind the scenes. Because when you’re creating something people reach for every day—like coffee or cereal—those choices add up.

A simple way we think about it

When we’re making decisions, it often comes down to one question:

Can we make this better—without making it more complicated?

Better ingredients. Better sourcing. Better materials.

But still something you actually want to eat, drink, and come back to.

Where that shows up

There isn’t one single decision that defines sustainability for us. It shows up across a lot of smaller ones.

🌱 How ingredients are grown

It’s easy to focus on what’s in a product. But a lot of the impact starts earlier than that—on the farm, in the soil, and in the way ingredients are grown over time.

Farming practices affect everything:

  • the quality of the ingredient
  • the long-term health of the land
  • and how sustainable that system is overall

It’s not always visible—but it’s one of the most important parts.

🫘 Why ingredient choices matter

Sometimes, making something better starts with choosing a different foundation. For us, that meant building our cereal around beans. Beans are naturally rich in protein and fiber, and they can be grown efficiently compared to many traditional cereal grains. It’s a small shift—but one that changes a lot, both nutritionally and environmentally.

♻️ Packaging and materials

Sustainability doesn’t stop once a product is made. It also includes how it’s packaged—and what that packaging is made from. We try to be thoughtful about the materials we use and reduce what we can, knowing that every choice has an impact.

🌍 What happens after

There’s also the question of what happens once you’re done. Whether it’s composting, recyclability, or reducing long-term waste, we think about how our products live beyond the moment they’re used. Even small improvements here can add up over time.

A few examples of what that looks like

These ideas show up in specific ways across our products:

  • Testing our products for things like heavy metals and pesticides
  • Keeping ingredient lists simple and intentional
  • Using beans as a more sustainable source of plant-based protein
  • Designing coffee pods without plastic

None of these decisions are made in isolation—but together, they shape how our products are made.

What we’re still working on

We don’t have everything figured out. There’s always more to learn, more to improve, and better ways to do things. We think it’s important to be honest about that—and to keep moving in the right direction.

This month, we’re going a little deeper

Throughout April, we’re sharing more about how we think about sustainability across a few key areas:

  • How ingredients are grown
  • Why we chose beans as a foundation
  • How we approach packaging and coffee pods
  • And what happens after you’re done

Nothing overly complicated—just a closer look at the decisions behind the products you already know.

A few terms you might see

If you’re curious, here are a few simple definitions we reference along the way:

Regenerative agriculture
Farming practices that help improve soil health over time, rather than depleting it.

Compostable
Materials that can break down naturally under the right conditions.

Clean Label Project
A third-party certification that tests products for contaminants like heavy metals and pesticides.

A better way to think about everyday products

At the end of the day, sustainability isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making better choices, consistently, in the things you use every day. Because those are the ones that matter most.
